he Top of the Box: God Has a Plan

Paul was writing from a prison cell in Rome, chained to a Roman guard, yet his mind wasn’t on his chains—it was on the big picture. Across the first two chapters of Ephesians, he’s been building toward something: we were spiritually dead in our sin, but God, out of sheer love, rescued us through Jesus and made us part of one family. Now in chapter 3, Paul names the plan outright.

“And this is God’s plan: Both Gentiles and Jews who believe the Good News share equally in the riches inherited by God’s children. Both are part of the same body, and both enjoy the promise of blessings because they belong to Christ Jesus.” — Ephesians 3:6 (NLT)

There it is—the top of the box. God’s plan is to bring everyone who believes, from every background, into one family and to share His eternal blessings with them through Jesus. It’s not complicated, but it changes everything. His plan was never about our personal gain, our career, or our comfort. His plan is to rescue us from sin and bring us home.

And this wasn’t a backup plan. It’s been the plan from the very beginning. God promised Abraham that “all the families on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3)—not just one nation, but every family, every people group. Seven hundred years before Jesus was born, Isaiah saw it coming: God would send someone to be “a light to the Gentiles” who would carry salvation “to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). God was never building a holy huddle of people who all look, act, and vote the same. He’s rescuing a hurting world and bringing unity through diversity.

Here’s the part Paul calls a mystery. The Jewish people knew God’s plan included other nations being saved. What they didn’t see was that Gentiles wouldn’t just be welcomed in around the edges—they would share equally in the inheritance, the promises, and the purposes of God. One family. One body. One shared inheritance. That’s the secret God revealed to Paul, and it’s still good news today: it doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done—God wants you in His family.
